CAMDEN SCHOOL CLIMATE CHARTER
About the charter
Between 2020 and 2025, 25 schools signed the Camden Schools Climate Charter to demonstrate their commitment to reducing environmental impact and engaging students in climate action. The charter consisted of ten commitments covering a wide range of sustainability topics.
Some of the work achieved by schools included:
- Reduction of single-use plastics: At least six schools implementing policies to encourage reusable water bottles, and reduce single-use plastics on school premises
- Improved waste management and recycling: At least six schools ran communications campaigns, including involving students in designing posters to show what can go in each bin and running assemblies on proper waste disposal
- Promotion of active travel: Introducing initiatives such as ‘Walk to School’ week, delivering bike maintenance workshops, and creating award schemes for sustainable travel to and from school. Five schools ran incentive programmes to encourage students to travel actively rather than by car or other high-carbon methods.
In 2026, we will be introducing a new support programme to support schools to develop their own Climate Action Plans in line with the Department for Education’s Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy.
You can also use the ten commitments and suggested resources for inspiration to develop your own Climate Action Plans.
